The Claims Process

There are a few important things to know about how Physicians Insurance approaches claims:
  • Every claim is unique, and each claim will develop in its own way.
  • Claims are managed by professional and experienced claims staff.
  • We select attorneys who specialize in the defense of medical malpractice litigation.
  • We take pride in our work and ability to serve the needs of our policyholders.
  • Policyholders are the decision-makers of whether or not to settle—always.
We know that properly defending a physician, clinic, or hospital is important for our members and for the medical profession as a whole. We always keep in mind that we work for our policy holders, and—unlike commercial insurance companies—we think about claims from our members' point of view. We use innovative methods to resolve cases, always taking care to work closely with each defendant.

If a specific claim is made against you, we will conduct an investigation on your behalf. This usually means securing the necessary medical records, consulting with independent physician experts, and providing a response to the claimant or the claimant’s legal counsel. You’re not alone in this process.

If you are involved in a lawsuit, we select defense counsel to represent you. We work continually with you, your attorney, assist in investigations, keep updated throughout discovery, and monitor the progress of the lawsuit toward resolution. You’re not alone in this process.

How to Report a Claim

Do not report claims, or refer to any specific claims, by e-mail or by fax. Confidentiality is essential to the claims process, and transmission of claim information through e-mail or fax could jeopardize the confidentiality of your claim. Claims can be reported to Physicians Insurance by phone, letter, or through our secure online form.
